Our History
Built in 1914 on the original site of the Johnson Hotel/Sherwood Hotel—which was lost to a fire in 1913—The New Sherwood Hotel was constructed with solid masonry and concrete to safeguard against future tragedies. Its architectural design, more akin to the grand structures of Louisville and Lexington, sets it apart in our quaint town.
Architectural Highlights
A highlight of our establishment is the magnificent oak and mahogany bar in our lounge. This historic piece originated from Louisville’s famed Greenstreet Saloon and found a new home here after the nearby town of Boston became a “dry” town.
Family-Owned Legacy
The New Sherwood Hotel has been lovingly maintained by the Johnson family for generations. One of the most influential stewards was Errol Paul Johnson, whose dedication and passion for the hotel greatly contributed to preserving its historical charm and family-oriented spirit. Errol’s commitment to hospitality and community made the hotel not just a place to stay, but a welcoming home for travelers and locals alike.
In 1992, six Johnson descendants unified ownership, continuing our tradition of warm, family-operated hospitality. Today, the fifth generation has taken the helm, bringing fresh energy and modern updates to the hotel while steadfastly honoring its historical legacy. Inspired by the values and hard work of predecessors like Errol, we strive to maintain the unique character that makes The New Sherwood Hotel a beloved landmark.
Perfectly Positioned
Located right next door to the Kentucky Railway Museum on U.S. 31E, our hotel is ideally situated for history enthusiasts and casual travelers alike. While the Louisville and Nashville Railroad ceased station service in 1954, the legacy of the rails lives on, adding to the nostalgic charm of your stay.

At The Sherwood Inn, we invite you to step back in time. Whether you’re exploring local attractions, delving into the Kentucky railroad history, visiting Bourbon Distilleries, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, our doors are always open to provide an unforgettable experience.
